The grocery store chain Safeway was so named because it operated exclusively on a cash-and-carry basis, and did not offer credit to customers. It was a “safe way” to buy food, in that you wouldn't go into debt in the process.

Grocery debt was common at other stores, which contributed to the Great Depression.
