I live in a place with massive diversity in population, religion, culture and economic means. I have never met an evil Muslim. Most of them seem very cool and are a delight to hang out with.
I live somewhere similar, and can say I've met both.
Like any group, you'll have the passive ones (technically religious but not practicing), the ones that practice but still hold some contradictory views to the religion, and the fundamentalists.
