Well I tried Xubuntu a few times, I could not make it...
You must be impatient with it, it works flawless for me, every use case you mentioned i've been through too.
As far as w7 goes, you can spoof real time clock for it, via time adjustment. Use it forever, as long as you have a good, curated "zero" install to reuse.
