Peeking at replies is also a good way for me to decide whether to follow someone or not ... sometimes their content feed isn't indicative of their social graces (or lack thereof).
That's a good bit of advice. I've found myself carelessly following accounts and sometimes it works out good, sometimes it ends in me making the edits
