Based on this situation, what backup solution would you recommend to protect data on Windows computers used by small businesses (no IT department) ?

OneDrive is not backup, if the data is only stored on OneDrive. Microsoft's default policy defies the common sense recommendation to have data stored in more than one place.

Bonus points for Open Source recommendations.
