I just confirmed it. After the fire the son John withdrew from society and lived an extremely sheltered life. He lived with bars on his windows and security doors.

He realized he had been tricked and was afraid they'd come and kill him so he wouldnt give a full account of what really happened. In the end his own guilt kept his mouth shut and justice + the truth was denied forever.
