The best way to understand how #NZPol MMP works is understanding that it is the Party Vote that decides the proportionality of parliament whereas the electorate vote simply decides electorate MP.
The more electorate votes the fewer list MPs and vice versa all decided by size of Party Vote.
There are anomalies such as when a party wins more electorate seats than their party vote would otherwise have earned them which happened with te Pāti Māori winning 6 of the 7 Māori seats in 2023 creating an overhang in parliament.
