I'm a former youth sports coach and since Trump's intervention (something no one who understands sports would've ever dare do), I wondered what the coaching staff would do. My opinion is they made the wrong choice by not respecting the red card ban and sitting the player.

Playing a suspended player says to all "we want to win more than we respect the rules of our sport"; I think whatever team you had, begins to dissolve at that point.
