However, HR can always find a way to legally deny someone for a job as an excuse even if the actual reason is illegal. Your mistake as applicant was not performing the secret handshake correctly or knowing the right people for entrance into the company (cult). Human Resources function as intelligence agencies whose stated goal is to help the employee (average citizen) but whose actual purpose is to be the hidden enforcers protecting the company (the state).
