They got pretty scientific about how useful shock, disorientation, outrage and demoralization are in keeping society engineerable in the early 20th century. The only defense is to disengage and focus on building good things in your own sphere. Keep an eye on what they are up to strategically, where it's actually relevant to your own life and work, but don't engage with media, politics or the system in general any more than you have to. Take your energy away from it.
