Are people genuinely unable to grasp the concept of the American Continents?

There are 2 of them, north America ans South America. The Guld of America is literally smack down in the middle of the American Continents.
It has not been renamed to the Gulf of USA.

While New Zealand is a Nation in the Ocean. Rather than a continent that is surrounding most of the Pacific ocean.
