The US didn't want an industrious nation like germany to have access to cheap russian gas, the alliance between the two would have created a big risk to US supremacy. Now europeans pay their LNG 10 times more and have no hope of being competitive. But most of all, supporting Ukraine and upholding the interests of Ukrainians has to mean reaching a peace agreement with Russia.
