I've only lived in Southern and Eastern England all my life, in previous years (especially 90s/00s) flags appeared as soon as the sportsball started (and often remained even when we invariably got knocked out at some point).
I think the gammons *have* had an effect, normie folk who aren't bigoted but just like football are now wary of putting up the flags because of the image associated with them..
