with that aside, now we could get to the contentious issue: how should the network handle arbitrary data?

current consensus says: do what you want with it. so it makes sense why you advocate the way you do. you have a use for arbitrary data, and I do not blame you for serving your interests.

but it also makes sense why BIP110 advocates argue the way they do. they have no need for arbitrary data, and I do not blame them for serving their interests either.

right now, i have no use for arbitrary data; it does not serve any interest of mine. I am on a BTC standard; it is my chosen money.

so what is the affirmative case?

You should do whatever you think best serves your interests. That's the fundamental premise upon which Bitcoin game theory rests. I'm not going to try to convince you otherwise.
