The fact that vampires cannot see themselves in the mirror is a much more significant & accurate representation of evil than I previously appreciated.

This explains a LOT about how many of the people in power currently operate & how they seem to be totally devoid of moral or ethical concerns.

The lack of ability to examine yourself seems like it would naturally translate into a total lack of empathy & a near complete inability to see anything from the perspective of anyone else. So what is good for them at the expense of everyone else is in their mind good for the world.

The Bible refers to vanity over and over. This is a similar thing for me appreciating the carnal solutions of vanity verses the spiritual surrender to the maker.

the vampire mythology is very interesting. as you say, can't look at themselves (although is the meaning the have no ability to, or don't want to see?), survive by sucking the life force out of those around them, can't survive examination in light, always operate in the shadows. pretty much sums up ...

Very confident historical lesson on the origins of introspection... Which ignores human mystic traditions for as long as we can remember. "Know thyself?" Guess not.

I don’t know if he’s throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Sure I get that you don’t need a guru or a therapist to be your guide, but “no one was introspective 400 years ago” - dude ever heard of the buddha? Lao Tzu? What were they doing in Japan all those years ago noodling on the Zen...

Jesus wasn’t introspective? Like what does he think he’s actually saying? I have to think he’s referring to modern psychoanalysis - in which case fair point, but I get what you’re saying Jeff!

Correct.
