it's not fair to blame individuals for social, systemic problems. you're right that it's kind of pointless to blame the companies, these psychopathic-by-design creatures, for doing something that we haven't made illegally costly; it would be sort of like being angry at bacteria for their making us ill. we shouldn't engage in victim blaming the users either. it's not lone action that can solve this kind of problem; we need collective action to promote social and political change, so that such abuses are understood and rejected by society at large, not just by a few. then businesses and governments wouldn't consider assuming or imposing such abuse on us, they'd take another path because ultimately they want our business and they wouldn't get it otherwise.
