The 5.56 was a good compromise between cost and power at a time when modern body armor was not yet ubiquitous (50's-80's). Now that it is ubiquitous, we do need a more powerful replacement for infantry use. The thing is: Companies in America and Europe have already developed those rounds since the Cold War era. We don't need to reinvent the long rifle cartridge wheel and drain billions of our sweat- and tear-earned money.
