The project seems to lean towards VPS use I’m “assuming” for reachability and easy deployment.
I’m with you and would prefer not putting hot infrastructure on someone else’s hardware which...
Agreed for max privacy, but I know it can be pretty darn awkward to be sitting at the front of a line paying a merchant while people behind you are waiting to pay, and your Lightning transaction takes over a minute to go through. Tor only seems to make sense for some Lightning nodes, but for other use cases, it's just not up to the demands.
I know I heard a bit about reverse vpn tunnels out of the start9 crowd recently -- they seem to be really going down the networking rabbit hole with their new router system. I'm not really one for the node in a box, router in a box, or really, much of anything in a box, but I do always appreciate when people publish the best practices they come up with for when I'm designing my own personalized boxes.
You want maximum privacy and maximum performance, I think you probably get the best of both worlds when you come at it with enough money to start jumping through legal entities like llc's, churches, or other entities that can provide cover for the individuals making use of them (super bonus points for being off shore). But naturally it can get expensive -- and I somewhat doubt you escape notice from EVERYONE that way -- just depends how much you've given those who can look under every rock reason to take interest in you I suppose. Sometimes the key to privacy is just knowing whose attention not to arouse.
