Sometimes I think it's hard to have real art without tragedy. A tree can't reach for the heavens without its roots deeply anchored in hell.
There's enough tragedy in the world without adding to it. Poor Chet probably just felt it too deeply. Which as you say, is why he was able to create such beauty. Music was how he channeled it, addiction was likely his brief escape.
