Isn't true. That's what they want you to believe.. that States like Greece Portugal and Italy would die without Germany in the last 20 years.. it's exploitation masked by federalism.
Other than Poland, Portugal is the only economy in the EU under considerable growth for the last 5-10 years and soon to be a net contributor while Germany is moving towards net benefactor territory.
Portugal's case is actually an argument for the EU and why it is necessary.
You might be confusing EU with Euro area.
The Euro was an exploit of the southern countries from 2002 - 2012 as can be seen by the initial currency conversion rates and credit spreads practiced during the 2009-2012 crisis.
Now it is a tool for sovereignty and the EU is a tool for keeping sound regulation over some naturally more loose (corrupt?) cultures.
