I've had a start9 sitting on my desk for at least 3 months and have been too busy to set it up. With Alby forcing moving wallets to Alby hub, I've started trying to set up things. It's going slow an...

It's totally doable on StartOS, even though it seems daunting. Start9 and Alby hub's apps will help guide you through the process as best as possible.

What you'll need to do is find Alby Hub in the marketplace and install it and all it's requirements. You'll have to set up a Bitcoin node and let it sync, as well as LND, which is the lightning node Alby Hub uses.

You can basically use the default settings and follow the prompts in your StartOS to set those up. Once Alby Hub says it's up and running, follow it's prompts to link up your Alby account to it.

Transfer some Bitcoin into the node and open a channel. I had to dig into the form a little to actually open my own channel with start9 themselves, but I got it to work. You can use amboss's website to find a good node to connect to. Asynq is great too. Make sure you don't broadcast the channel so others don't try to route through it. As for channel size, if you're just using it to zap, 500k sats may be enough, but you can make it as big as you want and make a lightning transfer to strike or river so there's some space in your channel to receive zaps and such.
