Well done good sir! Comes down to basic respect and interpersonal manners. All these people buried in their phones don’t know how to deal with people in nuanced situations which just amplifies their insecurities and rudeness. Glad you stepped up and didn’t take the nonsense, that guy learned a valuable lesson
