My theory on why now, is the fact that Chavez was a fierce opponent of illegal immigration. Chavez and the UFW were so against “wetbacks” that they formed their own private Border Patrol.
So the "Right" says, "See, even Chavez didn't want illegal immigration!" The "Left" can't have that. Gotta burn Chavez' effigy to the ground.
