Diminishing returns exist in every previous innovation. Once you cross 80% returns, the next 10% takes 100x the effort, and the last 10% goes on in perpetuity.

That is true only under the assumption that recursive self-improvement cannot mitigate the problem of diminishing returns. (As you said: "previous")
