Been here only since '25 but given the young age of this protocol that feels like an eternity...
Nostr for me was a response to the very visible capitulation of basically every US tech company to the Trump regime, as seen by them all "lining up" behind the Dais during the inauguration, and the pathetic displays of obsequious fealty that have occurred ever since.
What I've realized since is that I sort of arrived "late to the party" so to speak... The first big burst of Nostr growth seems to have occurred roughly around ~23-24, and I think since the twin events of Elon's takeover of Twitter and Trump's inauguration, the kind of people who were very concerned then about their free speech being abridged on Twitter have largely returned to X now that "Daddy's home", so to speak.
For me, I was never on Twitter/X, so there was zero temptation to go back... The people left behind on Nostr are mostly those who wanted to stay on principle, so I suppose it's a better crowd in that regard....
