Not to make everything about #urbanism, but a big part of this is about lifestyle w/r/t food shopping choices.

The "modal American" lifestyle for most of the late 20th century is to go every 1-2 weeks to the grocery store and load up the trunk of your car with a lot of frozen food, which by necessity is heavily processed and loaded with preservatives.

Look no further than the American obsession with Costco, which doesn't make sense if you aren't driving.

In contrast, Europeans tend to get food every few days, or even day, on foot or on a bike, and cook with fresher ingredients.
