If you haven't improved your life in any way using AI by now I think that says more about you than AI.
One mental model I use is power tools. A roto tiller can go faster than a broadfork. It is also more dangerous to you and easier to accidentally break things. The problem with AI is the dangerous bit is less obvious than the dangerous bit on your typical power tool. Even power tools keep emergency rooms in business, so the less obvious risky bits of AI are going to trap people who aren't paying careful attention.
I'm trying to start to use Rust for some of my coding projects. I could just start dropping prompts asking it to spit out code. Instead I set up a system prompt containing my relevant background and told it to be a teacher including asking me questions to make sure I understand. Then I started reading the rust book and using that AI as a personal tutor as I went making sure I understood and could apply what I read. Slower today but I'll go farther and write less unmaintainable slop in the long run.
Is an AI teacher perfect? No. Is a human teacher perfect? Also no. Both are better than going it completely alone or only with search.
