Guessing: the advantage AIs have for discoveries is applying the methodology of previous discoveries to a vast search space that is impractical for humans and even manual automation. In this way, AI can quickly identify gaps that would have been discovered by humans given enough time.

In other words, it helps exhaust findings within existing categories of inquiry, but cannot invent new categories of inquiry itself without being directed by a skilled prompter who is ultimately to be credited with that, should it come to pass.
