We need an unstoppable way to swap between cryptocurrencies. That would fix a lot of problems.
It's called "Atomic swaps" - working since 2017.
Bitcoin atomic swaps enable the trustless, peer-to-peer exchange of Bitcoin (BTC) for cryptocurrencies on other blockchains (e.g., Litecoin, Monero, Ethereum) without relying on centralized exchanges or third-party custodians.
This process is secured by Hashed Time-Locked Contracts (HTLCs), which ensure the swap is atomic—meaning it either completes fully for both parties or cancels entirely, with funds automatically refunded to their original owners if conditions are not met within a set timeframe.
Trustlessness: Users retain control of their private keys and assets throughout the transaction.
Privacy & Cost: Eliminates KYC requirements and reduces fees by bypassing intermediaries.
Implementation: Can occur on-chain (directly on blockchains) or off-chain (via Layer-2 solutions like the Lightning Network for faster, cheaper transactions).
History: The first successful cross-chain atomic swap was executed in 2017 by Litecoin founder Charlie Lee, exchanging 10 LTC for BTC.
