I feel that mourning is a form of jealousy:
they have escaped this damned world and left you alone in it,
a place you were never meant to be in the first place,
forced now to keep enduring it,

When I was a kid, my first real internalisation of death came from a book. It was Man Meets Dog by Konrad Lorenz. In the final chapter, Fidelity and Death, he talks about the grief of a dog’s shorter lifespan. Dogs live only about one-fifth as long as humans.
...so a human will watch a beloved dog age and die far sooner than any human born on the same day. He writes that in human life "all pleasures must be paid for by sorrow." I decided then that I would never have pets.
But I still have to pay the price for dealing with and caring about people whose lifespans are shorter. For different reasons, yes.
And those reasons are exactly what make them the best people to be around.
