Extreme materialism manifests as atheism.

The belief that the material realm is all that is significant.

There are many Catholics, Protestants, Muslims & Hindus that exist almost entirely in the physical. They are also consumed by these pervasive fears because they have never felt a connection with God. They understand God mentally through someone else's perspective, they've not gone within to find God.
