What’s the pro/contra of choosing ubuntu mate vs standard ubuntu?

I want to upgrade my old 16.04 distro and someone recommended mate to me but couldn’t describe why 😅

More people use Ubuntu than Mate. That’s a good reason to use Ubuntu. More likely that things will just work.
