I think its largely hubris.
They do this shit and even if the public finds out... so what.
They've sowed enough political division, fud, and economic stress, it doesnt matter what they do because everyones already fighting, no one trusts anything, most people already dug in deep in their beliefs and everything feels like its in shambles.
