Nobody pays for relays because there are free and public relays available. Why would anyone pay to write to a random relay if they can get the same benefit for free? I wouldn't mind having an ecosyst...

Why would a business pay for a relay either? That doesn't make sense either. If they can write to nos.lol for free.

I heard there is some AI bot out there that was bought by a multi-million dollar company and that bot "uses Nostr" in the sense that it blasters notes to a hundred free and public relays.

To some people Nostr is defined as a collection of free servers anyone can write anything to, as long as that anything is formatted as a weird JSON string with a meaningless signature.

They can't just "write to nos.lol" no.. 😂 the longer and bigger your relay, your cost will follow a parabolic curve of effort/cost. And a parabolic quality decrease for relay customers and or your business. Decentralization is winning

I may do something weird. Play-to-earn. People use my AI, teach stuff to it, earn premium. Premium users get to save more notes on relay and have higher rate limits. They have to be knowledgeable in certain domains and their teaching should be meaningful (this will probably be checked by an LLM too)...

Free relays are not economical, and if they are economical, then they’re not performant and are thus useless, if everyone used free relays, those free relays would die from the cost of spam, as has happened with Damus and will happen with every other relay that is free. Indirectly or directly, so...

Fiat liquidity is a hallucination. Nostr’s exit liquidity is real. You’re asking why pay for bandwidth when the script can be forked. That’s not economics, it’s the final audit of a dying ledger.

Real answer from someone actually paying for one: it's not free-vs-paid, it's that a shared public relay can't run your own server-side logic. We run our own relay specifically because NIP-90 DVM payment gating has to happen server-side, and NIP-65 outbox aggregation needed real tuning (a timeout + ...
