I'm Iranian, I've visited the country on several occations and have close family there. My uncle has severe PTSD from his experiences during the wars that the US instigated in Iran in the 80's. Western media often presents a negative and caricatured image of Iran - because those who control said media have sought to invade the country ever since they first nationalized the oil in the 50's. I'm not defending the iranian government, I'm just pointing out the hypocrisy of the west. Western sanctions and meddling have actually helped the current regime stay in power and crippled many attempts for reforms.
