Yeah I mean IDK what that means for "us" in the Nostr ecosystem... But the framework of what we have to think about is competition with an entrenched monopoly, or even like a "quasi-government".
You have to compete with something that "kinda-sorta" works for most people in most developed countries. It's a similar problem to Bitcoin adoption. but worse in some ways in that there's a social element that keeps people on X/FB/Insta... "that's where their friends are."
I still think the key differentiation is both self-sovereignty AND monetization. This is why I think the Mastodon connection is so important, because the people there at least "get" the first part of that equation, otherwise they wouldn't be there. (and yes I know federation != complete decentralization, but still way better than X and Bsky).
So they come to Mastodon because they're fed up with Billionaire-controlled social media, and then they come to Nostr to monetize their content.
