The argument against very harsh punishments is that they could incentivize rapists to also murder and dispose of their victims.
I don't know if this concept holds up statistically, but I get the idea...
I don’t personally buy that at all. Child rapists in the U.S. have a hard time in prison as is with the threat of extreme extrajudicial violence at every institution, and it doesn’t stop them.
I think making a forensically verified conviction face immediate death by firing squad is the only reasonable option.
With a secondary option for those who have pedophilic urges but who haven’t acted on them to voluntarily turn themselves in and be banished to some kind of colony like a leper colony.
