Yes a proper phpbb / reddit style hybrid would be nice. But I have concerns about the usability for casual users and the bots being able to access it.
What concerns do you have about usability?
Bots are actually a problem; groups can have an approval mechanism, but it's not always easy to distinguish a bot from a regular user. Probably a one-shot fee could be a good gate; but this can indeed cause serious damage to usability and the network effect.
