The more characters and a lot of different characters is required.
I once watched a video on YouTube which suggested how to create strong passwords. I adopted the approach.
It said start with a phrase only you will remember, such as
was born in surrey
And a number you would always remember, such as your year of birth
Say 1967
Add the two together, such as
was1born96in7surrey
Now make some letter Capitals, such as the second word
was1BORN96in7surrey
Add some symbols
was1+BORN96+in7+surrey
Creating a base phrase which you will remember
So now apply to every log in, say a bank account (eg nationwide) and you add the that word into the phrase at a particular location which could be anywhere within the phrase, such as between the 9 and 6
was1+BORNnationwide6+in7+surrey
As only you know the base phrase and where within you add the different names the password should be strong.
