Reposts are IMHO crucial especially for popular npubs to signal "this is good content" from someone less popular. For instance, I notice on Mastodon Cory Doctorow almost exclusively posts reposts.
As opposed to quotes, which creates a new thread disconnected from the original author, reposts drive traffic back to the OP, which is the intention here.
