From time to time, American weapons (and, alas, Americans) are expended in battles. Over the long term, however, most of the money we spend on defense is justified by its deterrent effect, and never actually takes the form of live fire.

And, as you point out, when we DO spend some of those assets in the field, it just means more of our tax dollars get used to cover the costs.

I just wonder what it would mean if half of our warbucks got spent on, you know, bike paths, or something.
