Perhaps that's a version of the "anthropic principle." They are asserting that our being here at all is proof of how special we are. Given that we have put a lot of effort into detecting other intelligences, and have so far come up with dick, there may be something to it.

I have to wonder if being on the field with a star player who was only there because of intimidation by Trump was subconsciously distracting to the US team.

Do you have a 3D printer? I held off from this craze for years because all I saw were tons of failed prints and frustrated students messing with glue sticks and doing endless recalibrations. This generation of machines seems to have gotten past all that. Nearly everything I've asked it to make, it has made without a problem. Thanks goodness it's not faster, or I'd be in debt for the filament by now.
