but desktop managers have been moving to phase X11 out, and if distros update to them, it won't be enough to build X11, you may end up having to build the desktop manager and the apps that otherwise would require the new desktop manager and its toolkit... it sounds painful.
we can expect there to be a few bastion distros to retain X11 at great effort, but if things go according to the presumed systemd-like plan, it will get increasingly difficult to keep up in case wayland won't work for you.
so it's very good to have the choice of running emacs as a window manager on a text console, if everything else gets enshittified.
