It’s disappointing to read that NZ’s fastest growing town, Rolleston, was initially designed in the 1970s to be a much nice place:
“Aware of the social and environmental pitfalls of car dependency, the plans encouraged walking, cycling and public transport - potentially capitalising on Rolleston's origins as a railway junction. The plans also emphasised the importance of creating a wide range of industry and employment in the town.”
Instead, those plans were all scrapped by Muldoon’s National government and we got the sprawling, car-infested mess the Rolleston is now, where over half the residents drive to Christchurch to work each day.
