I just have a GeForce GTX 650 in my desktop. Got it because the AMD on board graphics wouldn't do 3D acceleration with the Linux driver.
I definitely bought an Alienware laptop back in 2007 though in a similar state. Not as expensive as your card but inflation and all...it was about the most expensive laptop I could build on their site at the time. Had to underclock it to avoid overheating.
