we had thousands of years of culture to handle creating and enforcing the "shoulds" people ought to do - and very few of them were laid out explicitly

then the last few generations got rid of all of those systems so they could feel good in the moment and do unethical things without feeling bad

and so now we are where we are - neither women nor men are doing what they "should" because there is nothing to compel them to, and people are reverting to factory settings, and it turns out the biological default isn't a cultured and moral person
