I need to unpick this.
There's definitely a major problem with the Metropolitan Police - too big & covers too many bases (eg neighbourhood to diplomatic services). The Met has behaved as a law unto itself since I was a teenager in the 1970s.
I don't see the same issues in the regions that I see in The Met. Local police forces I've had rare dealings with have been human and reasonable (but I'm a white middle aged compliant bloke).
I fear a the problems some people perceive with the police is imported from the USA. No distinction is made between American style policing and British policing (reference the slang: "The Feds").
If you're going to be immediately confrontational when you meet a police officer, it's hardly surprising that you have a bad experience.
However, the recent clampdown on legitimate protest has carved a huge hole in that 'policing by consent' tradition.
This has been politically driven and senior police officers have questions to answer.
