I have to assume part of the purpose is to ensure that people have nothing to pass on to their families. Inheritance is only for the wealthiest of folks. If someone's hoping to leave their kids set up to struggle a little less in life, fuck that, grab all their cash & assets.
Whatever you have left at the end of your life—if you have anything at all—is forfeit to the moneymaking machine.
