Probably because the aggregate 100kb+ transactions is expected to be low, but is needed for special (shitcoin or otherwise) use cases.

My guess is they have some proposed bitcoin upgrade they got cooking that needs it. They can't reveal it for whatever reason, but is worth the tradeoff. Don't forget that these cypherpunks are in fact magicians. They know shit we don't.
