It's mainly Twitter's opacity and hidden agendas that made people distrust and lose faith in algos. But algos are very useful in extracting information, simple time-order feed is not very scalable.
It will be interesting to see the evolution of different algos in clients, server-based algo providers and algo markets.
Ideally there should be an open spec, to enable client-agnostic algorithm selection.
